Our next fund raising event is our annual Table Quiz which will be held in the Silver Key, Ballinlough on Thursday 23rd February at 8.30pm. Tables of 4 at €40 per table. This is an important annual fund raiser for the club and we hope that all adult members and parents of junior members will make every effort to attend and, if possible, bring along some friends to fill a table. We would be grateful for donations of spot prizes.

The Cork Head of the River was held on the Marina on the 18th February. Shandon had a huge entry of 44 crew and a very satisfactory return of 7 victors pennants. Once again our junior 18 girls had double wins in the WJ184x- and the WJ18 2X. In the former, Laura, Saoirse, Holly and Roisín led a field of 4 crews home by well over 2 minutes and Saoirse and Laura won the latter by over 1 minute from a field of 12. Another excellent win was that of Andy Harrington in the MJ18 1X by 17 secs from a large field of 15 athletes. Brian O'Flynn beat Mike Griew in the battle of (former!) titans in the Mens Master 1X by 8 seconds in field of 6. Pennants were also won in the Men's Master 2-, Women's Junior 15 Eight and the Women's Intermediate Scull. |

| Much thanks to all those who helped out with stocking and running the Head of the River Shop in the club on Saturday 18th Feb. We had a great supply of sambos, cakes, buns, tarts, cookies and even hot dogs (smashing they were too). The total net cash raised was €693 which almost exactly covered the €700 cost of the entries for the Head. This was a super result and a very important contribution to club funds. Well done to all who contributed. |

The club has received a donation of a new Linder Safety/Coaching launch. This launch is a very welcome addtion to club equipment. We now have three safety launches and with our growing membership numbers this will help us to ensure that we have an adequate number of safety launches on the river at all times. Linder is the leading make of safety/coaching launch used by rowing clubs and the new launch with its remote steering console and 15 hp engine is the recommended model used by leading clubs. |

The 2nd Newry Assessment for international squad selection was held on 11th/12th February. Club members Andy Harrington and Roisin Merz participated and both performed very strongly each achieving a personal best in the ergometer (rowing machine) trial. Both can be confident of being recalled to the final assessment in April. Unfortunately Jack Casey and Laura Coleman were unable to attend due to injury and illness respectively. They will have a chance to reach the qualifying standards in individual tests in the National Rowing Centre when they are fit again.

| St Michael's Head of the River on the 28th January was the first big competitive event of 2012 and what a big event it was. Over 500 boats took to the water at O'Brien's Bridge - believed to be a record for a one day rowing event in Ireland. Shandon had a big entry in this massive field from some of our most experienced rowers right through to those who were competiting for the very first time and we had some great results. We had too many entries to list all the good performances but some highlights are as follows. |
| Top of the list must be our Women's Junior 18 squad of Laura, Roisin, Saoirse and Holly. They won the WJ18 4X event by 7 seconds from a very strong field of 17 crews. Saoirse and Laura also finished an excellent 2nd in the WJ18 2X from a field of 22 crews with Saoirse finishing 4th in the Women's J18 1X from a field of 24 crews. |
| The boys did not let us down either with Andy Harrington finishing 3rd of 25 in the Men's Junior 18 1X. Colm Hennessy Emmett O'Sullivan and Ronan Byrne finished 4th, 5th and 7th in the MJ15 1X with Colm only 7 seconds behind the winner. A special mention also for our adult men with Brian O'Flynn finishing 2nd only 3 seconds behind the winner in the Men's Masters 1X - time to start serious training again Brian! - and our Men's Novice 4 finishing a very credible 5th in their first outing as a crew. |

Muckross Head of the River |
|
Muckross Head of the River was held on Saturday the 10th December, at the National Rowing Centre. The club had a big entry with a number of our young athletes having their first competitive row. Shandon won six pennants reflecting one of our most successful outings for a number of years.

Winners were Mens Intermediate 2- (Jack Casey and Andy Harrington) by 3 seconds from Neptune with four UCC intermediate crews also behind them. MJ16 1X with Jack reversing the Skibb Head result and beating Andy into second place who in turn was nearly one minute ahead of 3rd. WJ18 4X- (Laura, Roisin, Holly, Saoirse) repeated their Skibb Head win over Muckross and with Laura and Roisin also winning the WJ18 2X. WJ16 8+ (Katie Nagle, Sophie Healy, Zoe Kampff, Clodagh Scannell, Rebecca O'Sullivan, Lile McCarthy, Leah McCurtain, Daisy Callanan and Meg Holland - cox) in their first outing won by just 2 seconds from Shannon. WJ14 4X+ beat our B crew.

Just to emphaise the importance of making every stroke count, as well as winning two events by 3 seconds or less we also had three very near misses. The WJ14 4X+ lost by just one second to Lee, the WJ18 1X (Saoirse Horgan) lost by two seconds and the MJ14 4X+ by six seconds.

| The club took delivery of our new Italian built racing boats at St Michael's Head of the river on the 28th January. The Fillipi Coxless Four and Fillipi Scull are top class racing boats and underline the club's committment to ensuring that our athletes are provided with the best equipment we can afford. |
| Such purchases are made possible by the great committment of all club members to fund raising events such as the recent Rowatalon and coffee morning. We are lucky to have such committed members in the club and we look forward to your continued support. |
