  • On the weekend of the 5th/6th of May Shandon Boat Club embarks on a new adventure - our first ever Continental Regatta.   And what a regatta -one of the world's great club rowing events.   Over 160 clubs from 18 countries will be rowing in Ghent, Belgium.    While the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany with 100 clubs between them, have understandably the highest representations there are also rowing crews from as far away as the Republic of South Africa, Cyprus, Tunisia, Isreal, Belarus, Lithunia as well as those from GB and 11 Irish clubs.     The Irish clubs include four Cork clubs - Shandon, Lee, Cork and Lee Valley.
There will be 11 young athletes representing Shandon in crews participating in 20 races from Stephen and Ronan at Junior 14 level to Karen at senior/intermediate sculling.       It will be a new and unique test for all our participants and we wish them all the best of luck in pitting themselves against such a broad selection of international competition.
Our thanks also to all the travelling coaches and boat haulers.    Enjoy and have fun.

  • Our 2012 Learn to Row summer camp has been fixed for the 3rd week in July (16th - 20th) immediately after the Irish Rowing Championships.    The camp is targetted at 11 to 14 year old boys and girls and will be run by Eoin Coffey with help from our older junior members and others.    The camp will run for five days, 3 hours per day and will cost €75 per person.

The 2011 camp was a great success and many of those who got their first taste of rowing at the camp are now active members of the club.    The maximum number we can take is 40 and last year we were heavily oversubscribed with nearly 20 additional applicants whom we could not take.     So the advice for this year is to book early.

If you know of any children who might be interested please email secretary@shandonboatclub.com to book a place on the course.

  • Again some great racing at Queen's Regatta on the 28th April.   Two wins.   Jack and Andy in the JM18 2x and Roisin, Laura, Saoirse and Holly in the JW18 4x.    The four girls also had a 2nd and 3rd in the JW18B 2x.     In addition we had a finalist in JM 1x.     All in all there were good improvements from Skibbereen regatta across most competitions.    The JW16 8+ were unlucky to have crashed off the start but it was obvious from the way that they chased down the field that they are learning how to move an eight.    We can expect more significant improvements to come before the end of season.

We are waiting on the full results to be published so that we can establish the impact on the Grand League standings.

  • The club had a large entry in Skibbereen Regatta at Farran Woods on the 15th April.   With over 500 crews involved it was the biggest one day regatta yet held in Ireland and it delivered an excellent days racing.   It was the first of four Grand League regattas.   This is the third year of the Grand League and we have managed to win a pennant at the end of the series in both 2010 and 2011.

All Shandon crews tried hard on this occasion and most proved to be very competitive.   We secured an excellent total of five wins.   Laura, Roisín, Holly and Saoirse once again captured the WJ18 4X title.    Jack and Andy won the MJ2X, Colm Hennessy won a MJ15 1X final, Ronan, Stephen, Daniel, Evan coxed by Annie won a MJ14 4X+ final and Stephen triumphed again in a MJ14 1X final beating club mate Ronan by canvas.

As a result fo these and other placings the club finished 10th (of 21) in Mens Division One and 8th (of 17) in Women's Division One.
